General Election 2024: UK
2024 UK general election: Labour wins with 412 (33.4%) and Cons get 252 (23.7%)
A party needs 326 seats to officially win, a milestone that Labour cleared at around 5 a.m. local time on Friday, and the new government will have a commanding majority of more than 170 in the next parliament.
London(News9.us)- Millions of British voters across the country are taking part in the general election as the UK decides, who will get the key to enter Number 10 as Prime Minister on Friday.
Polls opened at 7am and voters can share their cast until 10pm.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife were the first to cast their vote on Thursday morning, at a polling station in Northallerton, North Yorkshire.
But after much of the country and his party soured on Johnson, Conservative party members voted in 2022 to replace him with Liz Truss, who became the shortest-serving prime minister in British history. Conservative Members of Parliament (MPs) then voted to replace her with Sunak.
(News9us)- A police constable working as part of the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s protection team was arrested this week for allegedly making bets related to the timing of the general election, police told media.
The security officer was arrested on Monday “on doubt of misconduct in public office,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said Wednesday.
“We can confirm that on Friday, June 14, the Met were contacted by the Gambling Commission who informed us that they were investigating alleged bets made by a police constable from the Met’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command, which were related to the timing of the General Election,” the spokesperson added.
The constable was removed from his operational duties. The arrest comes days after the Guardian newspaper reported that a close aide of Sunak made a £100 ($127) bet on a July election date before the prime minister had publicly announced the date.
When asked for comment, the prime minister’s press office told CNN they had nothing to add to the Met police statement.
